27.04.07: Scarborough Borough Council Sports Summit is a success!

Strategic Leisure Limited (SLL) was appointed by Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) in April 2007 to direct and facilitate a Sports Summit for the communities and stakeholders of Scarborough Town and its surrounding villages. The aim of the Summit was to identify a shared agenda and determine the priorities and direction for the development of leisure activities and facilities up to 2020.

The challenge for the council’s Tourism and Leisure Service remains that of delivering services across a large diverse rural area in a number of different communities and locations.  This needs to be achieved in the context of increasing pressures on revenue budgets as a result of efficiency targets and savings and with only limited access to capital funds for improvement and investment in infrastructure.  .

At present, Scarborough Town is undergoing a process of considerable change and renewal.  Yorkshire Forward’s Renaissance Towns programme has been driving the cultural and economic development of the Town for five years and the Borough Council is engaged in delivering a range of large scale capital investment projects to meet these aspirations.

Due to the sheer volume of developments taking place in Scarborough, it is an ideal opportunity to undertake an in-depth analysis of current sport/leisure provision and that required in the future, both for the residents of the area and the influx of tourists.
