08.04.08: London Multi-Sport Hub Beach Sport Venue

Beach Volleyball is a vibrant sport, since introduction to the Olympics in 1996 it has rocketed in popularity across the world, it is now estimated 35 million people play worldwide. Sport England recognise Beach Volleyball is a potential growth sport, and are interested to investigate the potential to provide a high quality environment to play popular developing sports with the aim of increase participation.

Sport England in partnership with Wandsworth Council has identified two potential sites for the development of a multi-sports hub in South London. Sport England have appointed Strategic Leisure to conduct a feasibility study into the potential usage and financial viability of a multi-sports hub in Wandsworth, designed to provide a range of beach sports facilities for the community, local schools and for elite athletes.

Leading up to the 2012 Olympics the proposed multi-sports hub would be used to host national and international tournaments such as Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) world tour, Urban Beach Tour and the British Open. Following the 2012 Games it is intended the venue will provide other beach sports such as beach soccer, footvolley and beachminton.

Strategic Leisure will investigate the potential market for a beach sports venue and ancillary facilities in Wandsworth, assess the likely scale of potential revenues and recommend which site is most suitable to host a permanent beach sports venue.

Strategic Leisure will draw on our experience of working on more than 200 facility development studies across the country to deliver a robust feasibility study that will help address sporting needs in London up to 2012 and beyond.
