Strategic Leisure -The Sport and Leisure Consultants 
 
Strategic Leisure has an outstanding team of leisure consultants with a wealth of industry experience. We never forget that our success depends on the success of our Client – we are only as good as our last job!

Mark Sutcliffe Mark studied Sport and Leisure Management at a graduate and post-graduate level and has over twenty years experience of working in the leisure industry in the voluntary, public and commercial sectors. Over a ten-year period, Mark held a number of senior positions within local government initially in facility management and latterly as Head of Leisure Services in a large urban authority.

Mark joined Strategic Leisure as Principal Consultant in 1994 after a spell as Associate Director with a large general management consultancy. He was promoted to the position of Managing Director in 1996 and led a management buy-out in 1998. As the majority shareholder he is the Chairman of the company responsible for strategic management and corporate governance.

Rachel Fowler Rachel has twenty years of experience in the public and commercial sport, and leisure sectors. Rachel graduated from Edinburgh University with an MA, and from Loughborough University with an MSc in Recreation Management. Before becoming a consultant, She had 10 years local authority leisure experience, covering sports development, CCT, facility management, play, outdoor recreation, strategic planning and funding bids.

Rachel has been with Strategic Leisure since 1996 and has progressed from Senior Consultant to M.D. She now manages the consultancy resources for Strategic Leisure Limited (SLL), and is responsible for the consultancy team, client liaison, project planning and delivery.

Phil Barefoot Phil has over 26 years of Local Authority leisure experience across a broad range of activities and facilities including leisure centres, swimming pools, dual use sports centres, athletics tracks, outdoor play areas, playing fields, event and festival management, sports development, play schemes, community centre and public and civic hall management. Phil has experience of implementing ISO 9002 and Quest across leisure facilities.

Phil has extensive strategy and audit experience and he has been involved in a number of successful bids for partnership funding from Sport England, DFEE and NOF. Strategic Leisure work experience includes the delivery of sports development programmes, service improvement, performance management, strategic planning including Sport and Recreation Strategies and Plans and Playing Pitch Strategies and feasibility studies.

Kevin Franklin Kevin has over 30 years of leisure experience in local authority, private and voluntary sectors with the last twelve years in the sport and leisure consultancy industry. This experience covers a broad range of activities and facilities including leisure centres, swimming pools, dual use sports centres, athletics tracks, outdoor play areas, playing fields, events, sports development, play activities, community centres and public halls.

Kevin has led most of Strategic Leisure’s market testing and public/private partnership projects in the last 8 years and has played a lead role in developing the company’s approach to management options and instrumental in the development of a Strategic Leisure’s pioneering best value leisure management partnership framework. Kevin’s skills include a comprehensive knowledge of the industry, cultural, sport and leisure operational issues, business planning and procurement, as well as an impressive track record in successfully delivering projects.

Russell McDonnell Russell has over 25 years experience of parks and Countryside management at a senior management level working in local government, the voluntary sector and private sectors. Russell studied for a combined degree in Geography, Physical Education and Art at St Katherine’s College Liverpool and has an Msc in applied Countryside Management from Manchester Metropolitan University. He also has a post graduate diploma in business management.

He headed the nationally recognised award winning parks service at Knowsley MBC in Merseyside. Russell has been a Green Flag Award Judge for 8 years and is a Cabe Space Strategic enabler. Russell joined Strategic Leisure in 2003 and has progressed to Associate Director responsible fro project planning and delivery of Green Space Outdoor sport and recreation.

Jim Sanderson Jim has over twenty years experience at Senior Management Level within Cultural and Leisure Services in the Northern Ireland Local Government environment. He studied Physical Education at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, gained a Diploma in Management Studies (Rec Man) at the Polytechnic of Northern London and has a MA in Leisure from the University of Ulster.

He has had extensive exposure to financial management, service and project management, human resource management, strategy formulation, corporate management and governance within a number of Councils. Jim joined Strategic Leisure in November 2005 as an Associate Director heading up the Ireland office.

Paul Woodland Paul Woodland has over 20 years management experience in the sport and leisure industry; in the private and public sector in the UK and Middle East. He has additional management experience as Head of Department in Further Education. Paul has specialised in interim and project management, feasibility studies, business planning, developing and opening new build facilities. He also has experience in recruitment and staffing assignments, marketing and due diligence projects.

Paul heads up SLI and has responsibility for overseas business development. He has first hand experience of working in the Middle East, Far East and Europe.

Andre Thomas André read Sports Science and Leisure Management at Loughborough University, he later went on to study Business and Management at post graduate level, and was awarded an MBA in 2003. He has over twelve years’ experience of working in Leisure Industry for both the public and private sector, and has held senior positions in Local Government, Leisure Trusts and the Private Sector.

André has extensive experience and knowledge of facility management, contract management, strategic planning, procurement, business planning, bid preparation and development. He specialises in leading and managing multidisciplinary project teams and providing focused and deliverable solutions to clients.

Steven Coupe

Bruce has over twenty years experience in the Sport and Leisure industry through public, private and voluntary sector organisations.  He has ten years’ experience at senior management level as chief executive within a Sports Governing Body in Scotland.  He studied Leisure Management at Fife College and went on to gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Leisure Policy and Planning at the University of Edinburgh.  Bruce has been a qualified member of ILAM/ISPAL since 1993. 

Bruce joined Strategic Leisure in July 2007 as Principal Consultant heading up the Scotland office in Edinburgh, where he will employ his extensive experience in financial management, service and project management, human resource management, strategic and business planning, risk management, policy and governance.

Nicky Statham Nicky has over 9 years leisure experience across a wide range of areas, including facility management, managing central venue leagues, and sports development in a regeneration context. Nicky has experience as an "Active Communities Development Fund (ACDF) Manager" for Sport England North West, managing the distribution of lottery revenue funding, aimed at priority community groups. This included recommending strategic direction to the Regional ACDF Panel and supporting groups in the delivery and monitoring of a diverse range of projects. She also has experience of developing policy as well as performance management in relation to Best Value and Quest.

Nicky joined Strategic Leisure in 2003 and has worked on a wide range of projects including feasibility studies, funding bids for new capital build projects, PPG17 studies and strategic planning.

Daniel Binns Daniel has ten years experience in the sports and turf management sector, having graduated in 1996 with a BSc in Environmental Science. Prior to joining Strategic Leisure he was a consultant for the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) he has worked on a number of diverse projects providing advice on the maintenance, development and quality management of sporting facilities within both private and public sectors. He also has experience of working on behalf of regional and national governing bodies of sport.

Daniel joined Strategic Leisure in January 2006 as a Senior Consultant and has worked on a number of diverse projects including PPG17 studies, auditing of parks and open spaces to Green Flag standard, playing pitch and green space strategies.

Lisa Berry Lisa is a sports graduate with five years National Governing Body experience, predominately in managerial positions. She studied a BA (Hons) in Sports Studies at Northumbria and is also a member of ILAM. Lisa has been involved in the implementation of a Coach Licence Scheme, the creation and publication of newsletters, re-design and launch of a new Coaching Programme, as well as Child Protection, Mentoring, Quality Assurance and Project Management.

Lisa joined Strategic Leisure in 2005 as a Senior Consultant working on planning, audits and reviews, establishing effective partnerships, company re-branding and organisational change.

Jon Carney Jon has six years experience in the sport and leisure industry working for Local Authorities and the private sector. Having gained a degree in BA (Hons) Marketing and Sports Studies, he has held a number of positions in Leisure Management including; Assistant Manager for two Local Authority Leisure Centres, Duty Manager at a National Sports Centre and Assistant General Manager for a premier private Sports Club.

Since joining Strategic Leisure in 2005 Jon’s work at Strategic Leisure has included involvement in a number of public/private partnership projects, development of facility management and operational reviews; a collection of diverse feasibility studies and managed projects that have secured significant external funding.

Steven Coupe

Angela studied Sports Management at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston. Angela has extensive experience in the operational management of Local Authority Leisure Centres and being a ‘shop floor’ manager ensuring the building is operationally safe for public use and delivering exceptional customer service. She has also held the role of Activities and Training Manager developing sports provision for children to young adults within the leisure facilities in the Chorley area.

She has worked on various funding bids securing new equipment for disability groups to be active and take part in mainstream sport, delivering bids for outdoor play provision and working on applications for multi sensory rooms. During Angela’s spare time she enjoys going to the gym, keeping fit and socialising.

Sport and Landscape Development
Steve Thomas Steve gained an OND in Landscape Construction at Merrist Wood College and then went on to join Nottinghamshire County Council where he worked for the County Playing Fields Service. In 1988 Steve became founder member of Sport and Landscape Development, working with Peter Dury, a pioneer of the synthetic surfaces and Performance Standards for the grounds maintenance industry. During this time, Steve gained considerable experience in design and construction of both natural and synthetic sports facilities.

In 1994 Steve succeed Peter Dury as Principal Consultant of SLD and in 1997, chaired the joint institute of Groundmanship, Association of Landscape Managers Performance Standards Working Party.

Andy Legg Andrew possess a range of horticulture qualifications achieved with the City of Liverpool and The Welsh College of Horticulture in addition to a fellowship of The Institute of Horticulture. He has experience as a Projects manager for Liverpool and Stoke Garden Festivals and a Directorship at the Horticulture at the Gateshead National Festival.

Working for Nottinghamshire County Council, Brophy Grounds Maintenance and Hiller Landscapes, Andrew has gained experience in assessing the quality and performance of a wide range of natural and synthetic sports facilities. Andrew has also prepared specifications, contract documents and undertaken project management on a number of new build schemes

Alex Kirby Alex joined Sport and Landscape Development in 2004 having gained a First Class Honours Degree in Sport Technology at Sheffield Hallam University. His early experience of SLD as a student enabled Alex to produce a highly successful dissertation looking at the performance differences, wear characteristics and spatial variation of artificial and natural turf football surfaces. His work was published in the Journal of Sports Engineering in August 2006.

He has considerable experience in computer aided design, creating professional drawing at design, tender and construction stages. Alex has experience with feasibility studies, report writing and contract documentation for a variety of different projects, covering both natural turf and artificial sports surfaces.
