Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, Swiss Embassy

SLI was appointed by the Swiss Embassy to undertake an extensive feasibility study into potential development of a major event, to be stages as part of the Spirit of Friendship Festival. This Festival represented a range of cultural events and activities nationally, to support and enhance the sporting competition of the Games.

The Swiss Embassy was interested in staging an outdoor event involving snow and ice, which could be used to highlight the tourism aspects of Switzerland. The study examined the potential for the event as a major contribution to the Festival, and was established that it was both feasible, and could be staged on one of the major venue sites in Manchester. The concept for the event developed to include bobsleigh racing, with international competitors, ice climbing on a purpose designated wall, a childrens’ snow play area, with toboggans, ice tunnels and snow balling area, Swiss music and cultural activity, and ‘real’ snowfalls over the venue site.

SLI developed the event concept, and investigated its overall feasibility, including venue availability and staging, health and safety, event planning and management, capital and revenue costs, economic and tourism impact, and potential funding sources, including commercial sponsorship. We worked closely with the Swiss Ambassador to the UK, and his team in the development of the event, which included regular liaison with the Manchester Commonwealth Games organising committee.

The event and the majority of the required funding were endorsed by the Swiss Government, but eventually the decision was taken not to proceed, because the additional funding could not be sourced. Based on the concept for Manchester, the Swiss Embassy did however stage a similar event in London, which was incorporated ‘real’ snowfall and a number of cultural activities.
