SEEDA; Major Events Strategy

The brief

Strategic Leisure Limited (SLL) and Sheffield International Research Centre (SIRC) were appointed by SEEDA to undertake the Strategic Review, Consultation and Analysis, required to underpin the development of a major Events Strategy for the South East Region. SLL worked closely with SEEDA, The South East Cultural Consortium, Sport England South East Region and Tourism South East throughout the study, as partners in the development and delivery of the South East Major Events Strategy.

Our Approach

The study identified all existing sports events (type, location, level) in the region, and highlighted those major importance i.e. national level or above. A gap analysis was then undertaken to identify:

1) Which major sports events could not be hosted in the Region, and the reasons for this

2) Which events the Region had the potential to attract

3) The potential for the Region to host the 2012 events/warm-up events

SIRC undertook an analysis of event typology to identify which additional National and International events the South East Region has the potential to host, and provided an analysis of the economic impact of a range of major sports events.

Project Outcomes

The study identified key issues and opportunities in relation to the developments of South East Major Events Strategy, and recommended organisational options for the way forward.
